Austin pop-punk band Gold Steps released a new music video for their brand new song "Suckerpunch", the latest single off their forthcoming EP Incandescent out Friday, May 25th. The video for the high-energy song, which is set in a boxing ring, was directed by TimeKeeper Media.
Much like the rest of the lyrics written for their upcoming EP, vocalist Liz Mauritz wrote about the everyday battle within her mind and the importance of mental health. Explaining the meaning behind "Suckerpunch", symbolized by the actors engaging in combat during the music video, Liz shared:
"Suckerpunch" describes the constant struggle to rise above damaging thoughts inside your head; just when you think you've got it under control, another "wave" of anxiety and pain drags you back down. Being at war with your own mind is a battle no one chooses. The exhaustion of self-doubt, the anguish of incessant negative thoughts, the distress of paranoia and constant fear---it weighs on you. The video's boxing storyline plays on the literal title of "Suckerpunch," and also shows how much energy is exerted in coping with anxiety. Round after round, blocking and trading hooks, praying to knock out your worst adversary: yourself.

The people behind up-and-coming band Gold Steps are Liz Mauritz (vocals), Zach Duarte (lead guitar), Elias Perez (rhythm guitar), Erasmo "Raz" Garcia (bass) and Roger Steadman (drums). Since they began in 2016, Gold Steps have played nearly a hundred shows, sharing stages with The Ataris, Aaron Gillespie, Ace Enders, Forever Came Calling and Jonny Craig; touring the Southwest; and performing at So What? Music Festival and SXSW. They've partnered with nonprofit HeartSupport to spread awareness and reduce stigma around mental health issues, addiction and self-harm. These hard topics are an overarching theme in Gold Steps' catalog, but are conversations Gold Steps hope to have with their audience against a backdrop of inspiring, anthemic music.
