If you have been living under a rock you probably have missed the splash that this band has been making in the music scene. Rivals, dark pop / rock band, from Los Angeles California has been making waves in the music scene in 2018 and it doesn't look like the peak is coming any time soon. I first encountered this band while stumbling across their cover of "Heathens" by Twenty One Pilots. Instantly drew me and made me check out their music at that time.
After listening through their songs for the first time it became very clear to me the potential of this band and where they could go. Their next release could really catapult them into the direction that I felt was inevitable. Time passed and Rivals announced their signing to Smart Punk Records, and this was just the start. Releasing their first single "Low" on Smart Punk, the excitement for the release of their debut album, Damned Soul, grew. With a release of just one song the bar was set. Signs of maturity, fine tuning, and development shined through. Many bands with a female front get comparisons to Paramore instantly solely for the reason of the gender of the person fronting the band. Kalie Wolfe, stands on her own in this music scene with a voice that cannot draw any comparisons. With the strength and range she has her voice is perfect for the dark pop feel this band has. Drawing you in during the delicate moments of each song only to blow you away with each in your face hook.
When hearing music like Rivals, my first inclination is always how will this translate to a live show. The band has scored some STELLAR tours and shows so far in 2018 following their late 2017 release, and are currently finishing up their run with Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. Never seeing them before, I walked into the Voltage Lounge with open ears not knowing what to expect. Once they took the stage I was BLOWN away. Not only by the full sound but also by the energy. At times it can be hard for bands to match the energy each song brings but Rivals left everyone entertained and wanting more. This show was a 10/10 for me and I expect nothing but big things for this band. They are a group of hard working individuals and the success coming their way is more then well deserved. If you have a chance to catch them on the road on their upcoming dates, we HIGHLY recommend that you get to the gig!
